Pokémon Moon – so far so good

So the new Pokémon games are out here in Europe, they came out a week after the rest of the world got them. I opted to get a EU 3DS, and play the game in German. It’s a good exercise, and it will make shiny farming with the Mesuda Method easier for friends back in the US.

Pokémon Moon (German Version)

First Impressions

I’m currently at the third island, and I will say that the first island felt like a 3 hour long tutorial. I understand that there are lots of new players now that Pokémon Go has been such a success, but I do wish there was an alternate way for people who’ve played before. This is a long held complaint amongst Pokémon enthusiasts, and with this generation of games, it’s worse.

The Pokémon

My first impression of the new Pokémon is that they look really really good. I especially love the Alolan form for existing Pokémon. I think this is a great feature, that I hope continues in future games. Firstly, because there are currently 800+ existing Pokémon. Each generation has certain ones that feel very similar. This adds new life into existing Pokémon, adds complexity to competitive battling, gives something for collectors to hunt for all while being not completely necessary to beat the game. This is the sort of thing I really like. I hope in future remakes, they add this as well.

The starts are all great. It was hard not to choose the cat, but the owl looked too good. So I went with Rowlet / Bauz (English / German name). Thanks to my friend in the US, I will pick up and level the other starters. I think the water is the least interesting visually, but the Faerie type it picks up in its final form is interesting.

The Story

I like the story. I won’t go into details, because I don’t want to spoil anything. More importantly, I’m playing this through in German. There are plenty of words I have to look up, and I am not certain I pick up on all the nuances that are put in. That being said, I do like the story, and I do like there are bits for long time Pokémon fans.

That’s all for now. I will update with more about Pokémon and German Weihnachtsmärkte.

More Pokemon Events

Don’t forget to run to Gamestop to get your Darkrai code. This is the first time I’ve actually been able to obtain Darkrai.

Also, if you signed up for the Pokemon newsletter before April 22, you should have codes for the bird trio. (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres).

Gimme mo’ promo’s

Just a friendly reminder to get your Jirachi promo! The WiFi in our temporary housing is crap and my 3DS won’t connect to it. So I used my phone as a wifi hotspot and that worked. Hooray!!

I also ordered some Dice Masters promo cards from a German gaming store. I’m pleased with the purchase. My thought was that I’d keep a few for myself and friends and pass them out for Dice Masters Frankfurt when people stop by and play. The guy at Family Time Games in Indy did this and it was super helpful. Also playing a promo card makes you look cool 🙂

not sure why this is  posting sideways. oh wells.

Pokemon Bank delay

While I understand delays in things, I’m kind of perplexed by the lack of any release of Pokemon Bank since the eShop has been fixed. I’ve opted to pick up Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon in the mean time. It’s actually quite a fun game so far. I alread wish the ringtone in the game was available.

I’ll give a full review eventually. I just thought it’d be better to post something while I was thinking about it.

Happy New Year!

May we all game more in 2014!

Work. Gaming. Pokemon Etc

As usual the work life continues to interfere with gaming. I’ve managed to beat Pokemon X. I’ve also obtained the post game legendaries. I think X and Y are great, but the post game is a little lacking. I’m hoping that somehow they patch in additional content. There are holes in the story, and plenty of locations that can’t be explored. I’m looking at you unused train station in Couriway Town, and doors in the power plant that are unopenable. I also found that obtaining the bird trio was annoyingly difficult. I don’t mind roamers, the part that I found annoying was having to check the PokéDex as to where the roamer was located.

That being said Friend Safari is fantastic! I’ve found it to be very fun way to get Pokemon and I’ve even found two shiny Pokémon in Friend Safari. The first was a Phantump, the second was a Wartortle!

Oh! I almost forgot! In November I was in Germany and visited StreetPass Berlin. This photo (modified by me) is from StreetPass Berlin’s FaceBook page.

brent berlin streetpass

I was mostly shy but I met two very nice fellows. One spoke English, and the other put up with my German. It was fantastic, and the StreetPass and German Pokemon were awesome. I can’t wait to go back!

Jumping around a bit, Pokemon Bank comes out in 5 days. I can’t wait to transport in my Pokemon from Black 2. I’m also excited for the Celebi!

More hopefully soon…

Pokemon X and Y – more thoughts after 4 gyms completed

Well.. I’ve now completed 4 gyms. I’ve taken my time. I really quite enjoy wondertrade. I will admit, that I do get crap sometimes. I have also received some gems. Someone sent me a Honedge with Pokérus! That was very helpful. For that reason, I’ve opted to infect with Pokérus everything I put up on wondertrade. I have also received many Japanese Pokémon. A friend of mine received a Japanese Ditto. That’s a breeding goldmine since the chances of a shiny Pokémon are much higher if you breed Pokémon from two different countries. I am still very much after some German ones. I’m hopeful a German reader will want to trade with me. Hilfe! Ich will deutsche Pokémon!

I’ve spent a bit of time in the Battle Chateau just to farm some money to buy Pokéballs and also to update the wardrobe. I still need to get different shoes. The moonboots are atrocious.

I initially was very dissapointed with the streetpass functionality of Pokemon X and Y. To some degree I still am. PokéMiles haven’t shown much use. They may prove to be more useful later on, maybe for the Rare Candies. I just have never had an issue with money late game so I don’t know how offering items is helpful. Hopefully different items will go up on the Global Link so something of value is given.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y – initial impressions

I went to the Nine Inch Nails concert at TD Garden last night with the wife. It was a blast, and by far it was the best of the 3 times I’ve seen them (him). We got home a little after midnight, and I wasn’t dreading getting up early to pick up my preordered copies of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y.

Kallehaius enjoying Pokemon

I thought the store opened at 10, so I arrived at 9:30 to pick up the Shiny Giratina Event. Luckily for me, the store was already open. The GameStop in Prudential Center is one of my favorites here in Boston. The one in Coolidge Corner is also nice, and by all means avoid the one in Natick Mall. That GameStop is the worst. Ooops… tangent, okay back to the Pokemon! I also got a poster from preordering. I don’t want/need the poster, so if anyone wants it, you can have it, for free.

Upon arriving home I booted up Pokemon X. I was tempted to choose German for the language, but I want my first few run through of the game to be English. The game is gorgeous and very well polished. I couldn’t have asked for a better entry point into 3DS for Pokemon. The opening variety of Pokemon in the areas leading up to the first Gym is very refreshing. In the the first area alone, I was able to find Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle, Kakuna, Pansear, Pansage, Panpour, and Pikachu from previous Pokemon games. I also found Fletchling and Scatterbug from the current version. I wasn’t surprised from the Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle, and Kakuna, but the Pansear, Pansage, and Panpour are awesome! I rememberly distinctly in prior versions not seeing a fire type until past the first or second gym, unless you chose a fire starter… (twisted firestarter…yeah).

I’ve finished the first gym. I’ll post a reivew of the first two gyms once I’ve completed the second.
